One of my all time favorites, Phil Mickelson, won the Masters tournament over the weekend and I for one could not be happier. It was great to see the return of Tiger and he represented pretty well for a guy that hasn't played competitively for so many months. I have to believe Tiger also still has a lot on his mind with his personal life and all.
However, it really showed that Phil has a thing for Augusta National. He described how he felt that he could make a mistake and still be able to come back from it. He demonstrated this on 9,10 and 11 yesterday when he made great pars after making three errant drives in a row. Then he birdies 12 and made what appeared to be a "miracle" shot on the par 5 13th. Phil actually down played the shot and stated that the path through the trees was more than what he needed and fairly close to him so the ball did not have to thread the needle so to speak. Still it was an incredible shot.
All in all Phil played a great round on Sunday and truly deserved the victory. After the round, the scene at 18 was heartwarming and it brought tears to many in our group watching the event. We also agreed that having Phil win and celebrating with his family was probably something the PGA needed after all the Tiger headlines for the past 5 months.
Congratulations to Phil Mickelson and I am looking forward to many more exciting finishes in this years PGA, Champions and LPGA tour events.
