type='text'>July 4th, 2011

This 4th of July Loverly and I were treated to a small town (albeit an affluent small town) celebration of the holiday. Norman Rockwell should have been there. We both thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

It all started with a parade at around 1:00 in the afternoon. Well I have to admit it probably started earlier than that because I think the American Legion Post had a breakfast earlier but Loverly and I usually don't get motivated until the crack of noon. So, we started with the parade. It was great. There was a ton of local support from all community groups as well as some from surrounding communities. When the military color guard came through, people stood and removed their hats!!!!! A lesson to all!

When the parade ended, everyone moved to the art fair that was taking place in the park down by the local beach. People meandered around the fair and found food stands a plenty for snacks and light lunches. It was great. I locked my wallet in the car so Loverly wouldn't sample all of the beautiful handmade jewelry at the fair.

Throughout the day, people were friendly, courteous and very tolerant of the many dogs that were in town. I am not sure I have ever been to a more dog friendly community. Dogs are welcome just about everywhere it is legal to take a dog. How cool is that???!!!

Loverly and I had a little down time and took in a movie and dinner then returned for the fireworks. Now I am used to the Target Fireworks in Detroit so this town had a long ways to go to impress us. I have to say I was impressed. While there was not the 1 million plus crowd that Detroit pulls, everyone in the area was there and left with smiles on their faces. It was the perfect ending to a great 4th of July weekend.

Loverly and I return home tomorrow though I am sure a fair amount of the folks we met will extend their holiday through the rest of the week. I love it, it is great for them and great for Michigan.

Michigan is a state that depends on the tourist industry. I truly believe that for every $1.00 you spend in Michigan during the summer and winter months, you get back $1.50 in fun and enjoyment. Part of that is the resources we have in Michigan. The rest is brought to you by the fantastic people who spend time in small towns giving of themselves in the manner Loverly and I saw this weekend.

Thanks Harbor Springs!!!!! .....And thanks to a dear friend who housed us all weekend and to our friends who mentored us through the weekend of events.

The Aftermath

The funeral was yesterday for my dear friend. It was a nice event. In fact, my Loverly said it was one of the best in both format and substance. There were a lot of people in attendance: friends, family, and business associates.

As part of the service, people were invited to come forward and tell amusing stories about my friend or simply reveal feelings about the life and passing of my friend. Several of us took advantage of the opportunity and told stories or expressed feelings about events that took place during his life. They were all well done and heartfelt.

Today, I stopped at the grave site and talked with my friend. I committed to return and discuss important issues with him and experience the comfort of still being able to share my thoughts and decisions with him. I also shared with him that cemeteries kind of freak me out; they are not my favorite places to visit. I will get past that though and stop and discuss things with him periodically much like I do with my family members who have passed. Sorry, but that is what I do and I believe it is good for me and honors those who have passed.

So, life goes on. It always does and always will. In this case, as in most, it will go on with a void and a sorrow that will take some time to mend. That is the grieving process. Once past it though we learn that life is a constant renewal. My friends passing is part of that renewal even though it will take time for us to really view it as such. God has called him home. His life learning was complete and he needs to prepare room for the rest of us schmucks left behind. I am confident he is doing that as we speak. Of course he is doing that between rounds of golf on the best golf courses heaven has to offer.

Play well my friend!!! I will be there some day and I want strokes!!!!!

Passing of a dear Friend and Colleague

Back in January I wrote of my friend that was fighting the good fight against lung and brain cancer. He fought bravely and won many battles but he lost the war yesterday.

Last night I began thinking about how you summarize a man’s life and the impact he had on the world he leaves behind. At different times in his life, my friend was an athlete, a husband, a father and a friend. He was devoted to his family and you always knew he had your back when the chips were down.

Speaking of chips, my friend liked to gamble a little and loved to play golf. He was passionate about his work both in the educational community and as a businessman/owner. He was a man of integrity and of good character. There was one way to do something and that way was always governed by his moral compass.

I believe my friend knew Christ in his heart and he was never ashamed of that and demonstrated it at every meal before which he prayed.

How do you summarize a man’s life and contribution? If you knew him you already know the answer to that question. If you didn’t, then know this; he was loved by many and he loved in return. He will be missed by all those whose lives he touched.

<img style="display:block;
A day for the young??? I am watching 3 young players as they vie for the lead of the Masters on day two; McIlroy, Fowler and Day. Some real talent in this threesome. Naturally my thoughts turn to how many tournaments have been won by first timers and how there are so many talented players who have not yet reached their 25th birthday. Will the 2011 Masters Champion be one such youthful player?

As I ponder that thought, I see that there are two veterans quietly making moves out on the course. in this case our enemies enemy is not our friend. We are now going to fund Al-Qaeda operations? You know there will come a time when we realize that we provided weapons to Libyan rebels that are used against our own forces in other parts of the world. Mark my words, it will happen. The rebellion has already been hijacked by extremists. Are we really choosing the lesser of two evils here?

I am all for the concept of being a world super power and having some responsibility for standing up for the little guy. We have done that all my life and it is one of the things I admire about this country. I am not sure our motives have always been philanthropic, none the less they have generally served our best interests in the process. In the case of Libya, I am not sure that is the case. This appears to be a lose-lose for the United States. Surely there must be someway to help the mass of people that were about to be are threatened by Gaddafi without funding Al-Qaeda rebels.

Life Can Sneak Up On You

How many times have you heard of a couple who couldn't have children and suddenly they are pregnant and expecting one of life's little miracles? Or how about the person that goes to a casino and a single pull nets a huge and unexpected sum of money?

Of course life doesn't always deal you the proverbial good hand. Sometimes you are dealt a hand you really have to play all the way to the final card and hope you hit the straight flush. Such is the case with my business partner and close friend. A short four months ago while on a business trip, my friend noticed a slight disconnect in his motor skills. At the advice of his doctor, he went to the emergency room of a local hospital and suddenly he is fighting lung cancer that has metastasized to his brain.

Now, there are a lot of ways a person could react to that kind of news. I have thought long and hard about what my mindset would be like after receiving that bit of information. Granted, for me it is only speculation but I am not the courageous type. Not like my friend who has faced this squarely and decided he would not let it define him.

I don't pretend to know the intimate details of what he and his wife go through on a daily basis or the moments they share thinking about treatment options, the effects of medications and what lies ahead, but I do know that they have a plan and are implementing it courageously.

They are controlling input and keeping it to a select group. They aren't looking for a pity party. They are looking for positive feedback and support and they are getting it.

Courage, strength, poise, class and a lot of faith in a Higher Power, that is what drives my friend and his wife. All great qualities and all qualities that I hope someday someone will use to describe my character. My hat is off to them and I love them both dearly.

Pray for them as I do. Pray the prayer that never fails; let God's will be done.

'This is why the American People have thrown you out'

Politicians or Middle School students! Always looking for creative ways to help our fellow man.

Help a neighbor weed or plant a garden.

Select some people in your life who you feel need a special lift and send them a gift: flowers, tickets to a special event, or a gift certificate.

Write a note to the supervisor of someone who has been particularly helpful, letting him or her know how the employee helped you.

Stop for a person waiting to cross the street.

Leave enough money in the vending machine for the next person to get a free treat.

Call or write to someone you haven’t spoken to in a long time, just to say you’re thinking about them.

Purchase a copy of a book about kindness, read it, put your initials, city, and state on the inside, and pass it on.

Call loved ones just to say “I love you” or to tell them what you appreciate about them.

Create or donate floral arrangements for a senior center, nursing home, police station, hospital, or the homebound.

Smile and say “hello” to someone you don’t know.

When you are waiting for service at the deli counter, trade “ticket numbers” with someone in a hurry.

Put a flower on a neighbor’s porch.

Pick up litter.

Help someone struggling with heavy bags.

Offer to baby-sit for free to give a single parent an evening off.

Call someone who has no family nearby and invite him or her to your home for a visit.

Call someone who doesn’t drive, and invite him or her out to lunch or a movie.

Surprise someone in your house with breakfast in bed.

Compliment a stranger about something they are wearing.

Pay the toll for the person behind you.

Volunteer to help at a school or library.

Adopt a stray animal.

Give a lottery ticket to a stranger.

Include a note or joke in your child’s or spouse’s lunchbox.

Shovel your neighbor’s driveway or mow the lawn.

Write something nice about your waitperson on the back of the bill.

Give your place in line at the grocery store to another person, such as someone in a hurry or a parent with restless little children.

Smile and say thank you to the bus driver or toll collector.

Hold the door of the elevator, subway, or bus for someone rushing to catch it. After loading your groceries into the car, return your shopping cart.

Donate blood.

Let someone merge into traffic during rush hour.

If you play a musical instrument, visit a senior center or hospital and give a brief recital.

Ask your children to go through their toys and donate some of them to children who are less fortunate.

Make an anonymous donation to a charity that is actively helping your community.

When visiting a hospital, spend a few minutes with someone who has no visitors. Tape coins to a pay telephone with a note saying that anyone who needs it can use it.

After reading a book you enjoyed, send a note of appreciation to the author.

Ask your children to wash an elderly neighbor’s car, mow the lawn, or rake leaves without charge.

Next time you finish your punch card for a free cup of coffee, give it away or ask the cashier to give it to someone who might need it.

Host a party for the kids in your neighborhood.

Make snacks and watch a movie, giving the adults in the neighborhood a night off.

Drive safely and courteously.

Carry inexpensive, pocket-sized rain ponchos in your car and hand them out to pedestrians who are getting drenched in a downpour.

Donate soda tabs or cans to a local organization that can turn them in to raise funds.

Save box tops for education and donate to a local school, even if you don’t have children.

Save coupons and send them to the commissary for military families to use overseas, they can use coupons expired up to six months.

Send a card to a lonely person

<img width='1' height='1' It was great to see the return of Tiger and he represented pretty well for a guy that hasn't played competitively for so many months. I have to believe Tiger also still has a lot on his mind with his personal life and all.

However, it really showed that Phil has a thing for Augusta National. He described how he felt that he could make a mistake and still be able to come back from it. He demonstrated this on 9,10 and 11 yesterday when he made great pars after making three errant drives in a row. Then he birdies 12 and made what appeared to be a "miracle" shot on the par 5 13th. Phil actually down played the shot and stated that the path through the trees was more than what he needed and fairly close to him so the ball did not have to thread the needle so to speak. Still it was an incredible shot.

All in all Phil played a great round on Sunday and truly deserved the victory. After the round, the scene at 18 was heartwarming and it brought tears to many in our group watching the event. We also agreed that having Phil win and celebrating with his family was probably something the PGA needed after all the Tiger headlines for the past 5 months.

Congratulations to Phil Mickelson and I am looking forward to many more exciting finishes in this years PGA, Champions and LPGA tour events.

Obamacare was mainly aimed at redistributing wealth | Washington Examiner

Funny how they start to speak in socialist tongues after the vote!!!!

Obamacare was mainly aimed at redistributing wealth | Washington Examiner

Disney Magic

So when was the last time you were a kid again? He didn't need to publicly apologize. He did not do anything to me for which he had to apologize. It really is between him and his family. If he feels that he must apologize to his foundation and sponsors, that is best done personally, not through a national event.

He seemed a little robotic and I suppose I would have been too if I went on national TV and expressed my regrets for having nailed half the women in the US. On a different note, I saw pictures of the women and I am not sure why he didn't just go home. He cheated on better than any he stepped out with. Oh well, I guess I would have to walk a mile in his shoes. Is that possible? This could be a new reality TV show. "Walk in Tiger's Shoes". You have all the money in the world and gorgeous women available to you daily, what would you do???? He has become the last bastion of no more taxes, or should I say revenue. That seems to be the new buzz word in the Governor's office to avoid saying the "T' word. With the new Michigan Business Tax we have the distinction of being the worst state in the union to do business in and now the Governor is pleading with Bishop to compromise and let her office initiate new revenue streams, aka levy new taxes.

All I can say is Thanks Mike!!!!

Pet Facebook

My dog has a sitter that has become very close to her and she is moving to Chicagoland. Is it so unusual that my dog Maggie has requested her own Facebook page in order to be able to communicate with her friend after she moves? OK, so I had to fudge the age for her as Facebook does not allow anyone under 18 to have a page and my dog is only 2 1/2 but in dog years she is nearly 20!!!!!!

It is also true that either my wife or I have to type for the dog but we don't mind doing it because we are on the computer a lot anyway. If it helps her get over the loss of her friend I am all for it.

Oh the things we do for our pets. In fact I think he and the liberal left are in the process of destroying the Constitution and putting this country so far into debt that we may never recover. However, I am so irritated at the amount of emails I receive that attribute things to President Obama and the Democrats that are blatantly untrue that I wonder if any of my friends even bother to verify the facts of the crap they forward.

When I recieve these, I spend just a few minutes to review the facts before I trash this crap and let the sender know that it is not true and please validate before forwarding.

Next thing I wonder is who sits around and compiles this stuff? These people must know it is crap so I assume they pass this stuff out to discredit the President and the Democrats knowing the information is a lie. Don't they know that they will discredit themselves on their own without lies and deception?

Oh well, such is politics; sad but true!!!!

Monday Maonin'

.....and I have nothing to moan about. Had a great romantic weekend with Loverly in downtown Detroit. Stayed at the newly renovated Book Cadillac and it was wonderful. Spent Sunday driving around looking at some of the other Detroit landmarks that have been renovated and some that simply need to be torn down. If you are looking for a great place to go, the Westin Book Cadillac is 100% smoke free. You can't even smoke in the bars. WoooHooo!!!!!!!!! They also did a great job restoring it.

We stopped into the old Fort Shelby Hotel too. It is now a Double Tree and they did a great job with that as well.

I have seen pictures of these old landmarks on www.forgottendetroit.com and I can't believe the condition they were in and how far they have come.

I am trying to get my hands on some correct version of the Stimulus Package and what is in it for Michigan. I am a little afraid that what I have seen so far is truly what the Republicans have been calling simply a redistribution of wealth. There seems to be a lot of money being spent on underfunded Federal and State programs. That was not what I had in mind when I was thinking about economic stimulus.

I will reserve judgment though til I see the documents. I hope I am wrong and that we are spending over a half a trillion dollars on something that might make a difference.

BFN, back to work and my caffiene free diet coke.

Connected

OK, let's see, Facebook for personal stuff, LinkedIn for business stuff and my Wii connects to the Internet for entertainment. Now I find out that my Blue Ray DVD player will be connected to the Internet and it will be able to download firmware upgrades as well as different content pieces as the technology matures. Of course I can also talk to my DVR from anywhere across the internet and record shows for later viewing.

I am in the technology field and not much suprises me these days but the explosion of the Internet and the variety of applications that it holds is becoming truly astounding. Quite frankly, the things I have mentioned here are perhaps some of the more visible but clearly not the most remarkable.

This weekend I get to set up my new TV and connect it with the surround sound system and the Wii and the Blue Ray just in time for the Super Bowl. Gotta love technology.

Here We Go Again

Here we go again folks. Gas prices are on the rise. Gas has gone from $1.54 to $1.99 in my area in less than two weeks. I saw it go up $.21 just today. How about we start to question the reasoning for this before it hits $4.00 again. Let's start letting the oil companies and our governmental representatives know that we do not intend to fund windfall profits again.

I am sure we will hear that instability in the middle east is the reason for this most recent uptick. Can anyone tell me when there hasn't been instability in the middle east? Maybe I missed it with all of the news about the mortgage and automotive bailouts going on but I do not recall hearing even one oil company complain about a 3rd or 4th quarter loss or even a peep about declining profits from the oil companies. I am pretty sure they all still made money when oil prices were below $40 per barrel and gas was $1.50.

I would really like to be able to turn a profit this year in my business without giving it all to the oil companies and our state government. Gas is one of those items that kills us. My employees were kind enough to help eat some of that cost this past year and I truly appreciate it. However, we have increased the mileage reimbursement rate because I can't expect my employees to bear much of that cost as it eats into there bottom line just a much as it does the companies.

So.............. let's all do what we can - as loudly as we can - to ensure that we don't see $4.00 per gallon again.

New Dog in the House

Well we picked up a new dog and let me tell you she is a just pure energy. Maggie is her name and she is an English Pointer. We picked her up from a Pointer rescue group called Pointers from Oz. They are located in Williamston, Michigan and take Pointers from all over the country and find them homes.

I don't think Maggie had ever been an indoor dog though she has certainly adapted to the life style. However, she really enjoys being outdoors and lets you know that in a hurry if it has been too long since she has been out to walk or play.

We take her to the local bark park frequently and to a location that is a large piece of fenced in property where she can run to her hearts content. We are working with Maggie but do not feel confident yet in letting her run in unfenced areas where she might get away from us and get lost or hurt.

Here are a couple pictures of our new family member. Ain't she cute!!!??? When I get a chance to do a little editing, I will put up some videos.

Golf In Palm Springs

A friend of mine recently returned from a golf vacation in Palm Springs, CA. He was pretty excited about what he found out there and so I asked him to whop up a quick review of the courses he played on the trip. Following is his review:

Hey John,

I thought I would take a minute to review the courses I played in Palm Desert, CA. I've attached a couple of pics as well. Feel free to edit and adjust as needed :-).

If you are a die-hard golfer, then the Palm Springs area is a MUST given the number of outstanding courses in this valley. Cities such as Indian Wells, La Quinta, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and Rancho Mirage are all within a few miles of each other and home to some high-end and highly publicized golf courses. My wife, Paula, and I made a recent trip to Palm Springs over the Christmas holiday. During our time there, we played 4 outstanding golf courses that I would recommend to everyone. Below is a quick review of the course and a web link to check out some pictures.

ROUND #1
Classic Club (http://www.classicclubgolf.com/) You may or may not know, this is the host course for the next 3 years of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. In fact, they were setting up the grandstands during our visit. Cost for two: $330. (Championship tees: 7,305 yards, 75.3 / 142)

This was the first course that we played during our trip. The course is literally in the middle of the desert right off of I-10 and only about 3 miles from the heart of downtown Palm Desert. As you pull into the entrance, you immediately see the quality of the property and your anticipation of the golf course really begins to build. The clubhouse is absolutely spectacular. The pro shop has a wide selection of clothing and gifts for purchase. In addition, the clubhouse also has a 5 star restaraunt (Rattlesnake) that we did not have the chance to sample but will in the future. Finally - the staff at the course were incredibly gracious and bent over backwards to make sure our experience was the best it could be.

Quick summary of the driving range and practice facilities: New Callaway range balls and the tee area is pristine. Their are a number of targets and distances to help you get warmed up. The short game area is HUGE and the putting green is near the first tee box and rolls true.

Course overview: The course was in fantastic condition. The tee boxes, fairways and greens were in perfect condition. I played the course from the tips just to punish myself :-). The fairways were sufficiently wide but several holes required you to aim your tee shot to one side of the fairway in order to avoid a water hazard or waste bunker. The par 3's were extremely challenging and had ample length.

My score: 84

ROUND #2
PGA West Stadium Course (http://www.pgawest.com/) Former host of the Skins Game - (The pros asked to not have it here due to the course difficulty level.)
The drive into this property is amazing. It's nice to see how the "other half" live as you drive past the private Nicklaus, Palmer and Player courses. I believe there are 5 courses at PGA West with the Stadium course being the most difficult (rating 76.1/slope 150) from the tips and measures 7,300 yards.

The clubhouse is very nice, as expected. There is a great bar and restaraunt which look out over the courses where you can have lunch or a post-round drink. The pro shop is loaded with merchandise and equipment. The driving range and practice facilities were disappointing. I'm sure it's because of the amount of use but the tee area sod was "thin" and the putting green really isn't convenient. (Who cares - Where's the golf course :-). One note: The staff and service at this course was EASILY the most disappointing. Once they had the green fees collected, you basically were on your own. In fact, we handled our own clubs from our car and back into the car. I'm hoping it was just because of the holidays. However, at a cost of $470 for two people, I would have expected a little more effort.

Course overview: Easily the TOUGHEST golf course we played during our trip. Of course I punished myself by playing the tips but I wanted to see the whole course (and I did just that). Typical of a Pete Dye design, the course has a number of holes where you stand on the tee box and just think "NO WAY - There's no where to land the ball!" Visually, it is very intimidating but - it is a wonderful challenge. One example, the 6th hole is a par 3 with basically an island green and measures 255 yards! Pete Dye named this one AMEN on the scorecard. I'm proud to say that I did put it on the green (with a driver) however, I'm embarrassed to say that I couldn't stand the success and I three putted!! ($#%@#). Other holes are affectionately named: "Sand Pit", "Black Hole", "Eternity", "Moat", "Second Thoughts", and "Alcatraz" and provide enough bunkers, mounds, and rolling greens to keep you from sleeping well for a few days after you finish your round.

My score: 89

ROUND #3
Marriott Shadow Ridge - Nick Faldo (http://www.marriottsshadowridge.com/) (Black Tees: 7,006 yards, 73.9 / 134) Cost for two: $160 - owner rate.

This resort was the whole reason why we made the trip to Palm Springs. It was a time share package visit and we LOVED it. If your interested in details, drop me an email and I can share with you some insight on why we decided to purchase at this site.

The property is absolutely wonderful. The pro shop has a great selection of merchandise and the staff was extremely service oriented (like most Marriott's). The practice facilities are conveniently located close to the pro shop with unlimited range time. They also have a Jim McClean golf instruction school on property. Faldo's bar and grill look out over the first tee box and they have a wonderful veranda to watch from.

This course is a traditional links style layout (as expected from designer Nick Faldo). It measures 7,006 yards from the back tees but the fairways are pretty much right in front of you and generous in width. This allows you to really go after the tee shots :-). Their are ample bunkers and just enough water on the course to make you focus on each shot. The course was in great shape and a pleasure. The greens have a number of levels which requires you to "aim" for a particular quadrant of the green in order to have a chance at birdie. Faldo uses the apron areas throughout the course to allow for many bump and run shots. This course is a great test of golf and is very female friendly. It would be a great course for couples golf.

My score: 84

ROUND #4
Indian Wells - Celebrity Course (http://www.indianwellsgolfresort.com/sites/courses/layout9.asp?id=315&page=32442) (Cabernet - Championship tees: 7,050 yards, 74.2 / 138) Cost for two: $250

This course is the host of the current LG Skins Game which was just on TV prior to the holiday's. Since they had just played the Skins Game, the course was in AMAZING condition. One reason for this is they don't allow you to drive the carts in the fairway. In fact, the starter indicated they are seriously considering turning this course into a walking course in order to maintain the current conditions.

The clubhouse is currently under construction so the pro shop was in a temporary tent facility. Plenty of merchandise to choose from. The driving range was pretty disappointing. The sod was pretty thin and you really didn't have a viable target to aim at since the range seemed to be on the side of a hill that ran right to left. In fact, it was difficult to see your ball land.

The Indian Wells resort is very nice (not sure I would stay there though).

The Celebrity course was by far the MOST MANICURED course we played during our visit. In fact, I don't know that I have ever been on a course that was more pristine from tee box to green. Even the flower beds were perfect! The course is pretty tight so you really need to make sure you have control of your tee shots. There is only one par 5 and one par 3 on each of the 9's so you really have to make your scores count on these holes. The man-made waterfalls, streams and landscaping makes you feel as though you are in an oasis. Literally - you feel like you are in a desert oasis. At times, it almost feels as if it isn't real. Take a look at the web site, I think you will see what I mean.

There are plenty of bunkers and water hazards to choose from. In addition, the "water drain" comes into play on holes 9 and 10 and can be a real pain to hit your ball back onto the course (just ask my lovely bride) :-). Overall, I would play this course again just to soak in the beauty they have created. It's a very playable course if you can get your tee shot in play. The greens have plenty of break but roll true once you figure out the speed.

My score: 83

Bottom line - Golf in the Palm Springs area is fantastic. It's expensive but if you are going to make a "once in a lifetime" golf trip, this is a great place to do it.

So, if you have the urge it sounds to me like Palm Springs is maybe as much a golfers paradise as Michigan except you could play there this week!!!!!!!

The New Year and New Topics

Here's to the many wonderful things the new year will bring all of us.

Some of the items I plan to look at this year are reviews and critiques of some of the great golf courses I have played over the past few years and those I hope to play this year. I have even asked my wife to review some of the courses from the perspective of playing from the front tees. Not all courses are "women friendly" and with some luck we can get opinions on those that are and those that may require a extra length for the women.

I have also encouraged some of my friends who travel and play golf to participate in this process so we can get some diverse opinions and maybe cover more territory than I could cover based solely on my own travels.

Periodically I hope to introduce some additional topics including life after pets and will we see our pets in the hereafter. I am sure this could lead to some impassioned debates. It is also an election year so don't be surprised if some political "stuff" springs up periodically including links to other sites that might have some enlightened opinions - and not all of them conservative.

Enough for now, Happy New Year to all and I look forward to your visits.

By the way, anyone thinking about creating a nice little backyard retreat this summer may want to consider getting the designs rolling early this spring. A friend of mine is a true talent in that regards. Check out his website at www.carterlandscaping.net for some inspiration.

Great Story

Sue and I were out shopping tonight and heard a great story at the Art Van near our house. Apparently there were two stray beagles that were out in the cold and found their way to the front door of the Art Van furniture store. This particular Art Van has two sets of automatic doors that are motion activated. The two young beagles walked past the front of the store and the first set of doors opened so they walked into the entryway. Once inside, the second set of doors opened and they meandered into the store and jumped up on the first comfortable sofa they found and promptly curled up and fell asleep.

It took several customers coming in before someone mentioned to a salesperson that the two dogs were so cute. Of course this alarmed the salesperson and they immediately went to look at the two dogs. Both dogs were filthy, cold and hungry. They were also both lucky to be alive as the Art Van is on a major 4 lane highway.

The Staff at Art Van called the Humane Society who came and relieved them of the two dogs. Of course that is not the end of the story. As you have read here, we recently lost our dog who was part beagle and as you may be guessing, we are going to call and ascertain the disposition of the two dogs and may bring one home if they are still available.

Stay tuned for future pet updates.

On another note, I spend a lot of time in my car and as a result have become a big fan of books on tape/CD. Mostly I check them out of our local library but frequently I will get them for presents at birthdays and Christmas. Does any one know of a place or organization where I can swap tapes/CDs? Needless to say, I am beginning to build up a small library. If I can't find a swap source, I will likely donate them to our library or senior center or some other organization that could put them to good use but I thought I would at least throw the question out here.

Have a great New Year everyone!!!!!

My Dear Children

I really don't know who authored this and so I hope they forgive me if I post it here but I thought it was quite well done. It is quite appropriate for all Christians and I am sure the principles are universal.

My Dear Children,

It has come to my attention that many of you are upset that folks are taking My name out of the season. Maybe you've forgotten that I wasn't actually born during this time of the year and that it was some of your predecessors who decided to celebrate My birthday on what was actually a time of pagan festival.

Although I do appreciate being remembered anytime, how I personally feel about this celebration can probably be most easily understood by those of you who have been blessed with children of your own.

I don't care what you call the day. If you want to celebrate My birth, just get along and love one another.

Now, having said that let Me go on. If it bothers you that the town in which you live doesn't allow a scene depicting My birth, then just get rid of a couple of Santa's and snowmen and put in a small Nativity scene on your own front lawn. If all My followers did that there wouldn't be any need for such a scene on the town square because there would be many of them all around town.

Stop worrying about the fact that people are calling the tree a holiday tree, instead of a Christmas tree. It was I who made all trees. You can remember Me anytime you see any tree. Decorate a grape vine if you wish: I actually spoke of that one in a teaching, explaining who I am in relation to you and what each of our tasks were. If you have forgotten that one, look up John 15: 1 - 8.

If you want to give Me a present in remembrance of My birth here is my wish list. Choose something from it:

1. Instead of writing protest letters objecting to the way My birthday is being celebrated, write letters of love and hope to soldiers away from home. They are terribly afraid and lonely this time of year. I know, they tell Me all the time.

2. Visit someone in a nursing home. You don't have to know them personally. They just need to know that someone cares about them.

3. Instead of writing George complaining about the wording on the cards his staff sent out this year, why don't you write and tell him that you'll be praying for him and his family this year. Then follow up. It will be nice hearing from you again.

4. Instead of giving your children a lot of gifts you can't afford and they don't need, spend time with them. Tell them the story of My birth, and why I came to live with you down here. Hold them in your arms and remind them that I love them.
5. Pick someone that has hurt you in the past and forgive him or her.

6. Did you know that someone in your town will attempt to take their own life this season because they feel so alone and hopeless? Since you don't know who that person is, try giving everyone you meet a warm smile; it could make the difference.

7. Instead of nit picking about what the retailer in your town calls the holiday, be patient with the people who work there. Give them a warm smile and a kind word. Even if they aren't allowed to wish you a "Merry Christmas" that doesn't keep you from wishing them one. Then stop shopping there on Sunday. If the store didn't make so much money on that day they'd close and let their employees spend the day at home with their families.

8. If you really want to make a difference, support a missionary - especially one who takes My love and Good News to those who have never heard My name.

9. There are individuals and whole families in your town who not only will have no "Christmas" tree, but neither will they have any presents to give or receive. If you don't know them, buy some food and a few gifts and give them to the Salvation Army or some other charity which believes in Me and they will make the delivery for you.

10. Finally, if you want to make a statement about your belief in and loyalty to Me, then behave like a Christian. Don't do things in secret that you wouldn't do in My presence. Let people know by your actions that you are one of mine. Don't forget; I am God and can take care of Myself. Just love Me and do what I have told you to do. I'll take care of all the rest.

Check out the list above and get to work; time is short. I'll help you, but the ball is now in your court. And do have a most blessed Christmas with all those whom you love and remember: I LOVE YOU, JESUS

~Earthly Author Unknown~

Have a great weekend!!!!!

Lost another one!!

Never acquire all your pets in the same time period! My wife and I picked up a cat from a shelter, were given a cat from a friend and purchased a dog for my son all in a span of 2 years. Now it seems life has decided that we are going to lose them all in an even shorter time frame. In August we lost our oldest cat due to a variety of illnesses but mostly kidney failure. On Saturday, November 3rd we had to put down our dog. Freebie was a beagle/German short hair mix and maybe the smartest dog I have ever known. This dog even learned hand signals when she lost her hearing 2 years ago.

In addition to being a smart dog, she was my wife's true companion. I know what you are thinking, we got the dog for my son. True, but the dog always was my wife's best friend and of course when my son moved to Colorado, the dog stayed with us.

Freebie was nearly 15 years old and has had some health issues over the last few years. She has been a real trooper though and fought to the last. Early this month she slowed down considerably and on a Saturday several weeks ago, we took her in to the Vet and found out she had a mass in her abdomen that was now bleeding severely. We spent some time with her at the Vets and then stayed with her as she fell into everlasting sleep.

We now have one cat left and it is obvious that she misses the other two. Her eating habits have changed, she is talking up a blue streak and losing weight. Needless to say we are watching her closely because we really don't want to lose our third and last friend.

I have had pets all my life but these three pets have been more like children to my wife and me. The cat we lost in August, Kitty, was with us for 18 years and Abbie, our surviving pet is 17 this year. With Freebie having been with us for 15 years, it has been hard to lose them.

We have talked about getting another dog but our biggest fear is what affect that will have on Abbie. We will likely solicit advise from our Vet and see what his thoughts are.

Just a word about our Veterinarian - if you live within driving distance of Waterford, Michigan, you should take your pets to this place. The Veterinarian is Tyler Hutchinson and the Hospital is Pet Authority. The entire staff is absolutely the best in the business. They are caring professionals that have worked with us and our pets for years now and proven themselves to be some of the best practitioners of Veterinary medicine I have ever met. Dr. Hutchinson and his staff have become like family and helped us not only in the treatment of our pets but also in the grieving process. What a great group.

This is Freebie in her Lazy Boy recliner after a trip to the Vet.

Lost a good pet

Well it finally happened. We had to put down on of our cats this week. Kitty, (yes, that was her name) was 19 years old and had renal failure. She had a good run and she was a great cat. She gave us a lot of fun over the years and was companion to another cat and our dog. It is also obvious that the other two notice her absence. Seems odd but they do.

This is the first time I have had to put a pet down. Growing up I don't recall that we ever had to do that. Maybe we did and my Dad handled it without my knowledge but I don't think so. We had several dogs that we kept until they were seniors but most died by running into cars and one supposedly ran away. Hmmmmmmm

We knew this would happen soon, especially when you consider that all three of our pets were acquired in a short span of time. We now face the reality of losing them all in a short span of time. The other cat is 18 and the dog is now going on 15. That's going to be tough.

My wife was pretty upset with having to put Kitty down but that will pale in comparison to when we eventually have to take the dog in. She and the dog are like best buddies. They do a lot together and have for nearly 15 years now. I am not looking forward to that day.

Well it is the weekend and it is proving to be a warm one. However, Michigan has a lot of lakes and I need to go find one.

BFN

Prayers for a Friend

A little over 6 years ago I quit smoking. I had tried so many times to quit and had almost resolved that I would never be able to do it and that whatever ravages smoking would take on my body was just going to have to happen. Then I met a gal who got me involved in the American Lung Associations program to quit smoking. Lo and behold, it worked for me. She then led me to the Quit Smoking Journals for ongoing support and the rest as they say is history.

Unfortunately the story doesn't end there. My friend has now contracted lung cancer. She has quit smoking and the demon still found her after all these years. So....... I, and hopefully anyone who reads this, will offer up a prayer for my friend. Let's pray the prayer that never fails: "Let God's will be done!"

Thanks

Our Government in Action

Anybody listen to Frank Beckman on WJR this morning? I listened to him discuss the Farm Bill with Rep. Tim Walberg. Sometimes I think our Democratic Leadership is nothing shy of devious. There appears to be no integrity there at all!! In discussing the Farm Bill, Rep. Walberg noted how the Democratic Leadership - after committing to NOT add any tax increases to the bill - placed additional taxes in it that would effectively choke any foreign corporations that have operations in this country. Rep. Walberg stated that it would increase certain tax expenditures to these corporations by 600%.

Can you imagine what that would do to any business? At a minimum it is a violation of certain treaties that the US has in place, it would also under reciprocity likely incur similar taxes on US corporations doing business in those foreign countries. At its worst, it would jeopardize over 5.1 million jobs in the US and over 250,000 in Michigan alone.

Understand, this is a farm bill and the tax increase was put on manufacturers. Understand also that 66% of this Farm Bill goes to covering food stamps and nutrition programs.

I really believe the Democrats are moving closer and closer to socialism and we are all going to pay for it unless we stay ever vigilant.

On a lighter note, Rep. John Conyers continues to waste our tax dollars on why federal prosecutors will released. Oh well, we continue to elect these people.

By the way, people talk about the Presidents approval rating. Did you know the approval rating of Congress in general is 14%!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why don't we change this and vote these fools out????

All Night Session

My bad but somehow I missed reading about all the good stuff that came out of the all night session that our legislators pulled. When I look at the cost of crude oil and the cost for refining and distribution, I don't see the increase that has warranted this pricing. Sure, I recognize that Katrina and some of the other natural disasters took a bite out of refining and distribution systems but at $1.00 per gallon increase X the number of gallons sold in the past two years, I think they could have rebuilt the entire infrastructure by now.

And of course there is now the whole ethanol thing taking place. The price of corn and other vegetables are going up. Corn due to the increased demand and the opportunity for windfall profits and other vegetables because farmers are dedicating more land to corn and leaving a shortage of available farmland for these other crops. We end up paying on both ends. That's just great!!!!!

I really had hoped ethanol would be a low cost alternative to gasoline. Cheaper and cleaner; what could be better? But no, soon ethanol will be as expensive or more expensive than gasoline just because of the "supply and demand" concept. What a crock! I will just continue to by gas for my car. No incentive for me to upgrade to a flex vehicle.

Ever ask yourself who is making all the real profits? I guarantee that it is not the station owner or the crude oil folks or the refiners. Who then? Question, isn't oil traded as a commodity? Think about it!

Northern Michigan

Loverly and I just returned from a nice long weekend in Northern Michigan and I have to admit that there is no better place on the planet. I for one am insulted and it shows just how out of touch the democratic party is with what the people really want in this country. The liberal Democrats (and frankly most politicians) march strictly to their party's agenda.

On the homefront, Michigan is in the midst of a one state recession and our state legislature is struggling with how to correct a deficit budget for next fiscal year. Of course an increase in revenue is one solution (that's the new name for a tax increase) along with cutting more expenses.

I just love how they are doing it though. They debate the merits of business and income taxes knowing that these will get alot of public attention and scrutiny. At the same time they have snuck in legislation aimed at taxing everything from telephone service to entertainment venues. Knowing this time that the media will turn a blind eye to these tactics. Watch out people; it will happen before you know it. When I look at my phone bill now and what I pay for entertainment tickets, there is already enough taxes and surcharges on everything. (See House Bill 4852 and/or check out http://www.notickettax.com/) Let's just leave it alone and deal with the real problems; our state government needs massive restructuring to make it more efficient and effective. Nuff said.

Locally, the weather is great here in Michigan and if you are not from here you should give it a try. You will find a great state with lot's of good people and a lot a fun things to do.
